Private label vs custom supplement development

DAT Supply has two productised paths to a finished product: the private-label catalogue and Formula Adaptation, which adapts an existing DAT Supply formula. Both go through the same production and quality-review infrastructure — the difference is whether the formula changes and how many review steps sit between brief and specification sign-off. Work beyond both, such as new-product R&D or due diligence, is a Custom Project.

Documentation 4 review steps by project stage

Private label — start from a reviewed catalogue concept

You select a published concept (format, flavour, dose anchor) already reviewed by DAT and confirm packaging, label artwork and target market. Formulation risk is lower because the base concept has already been through formulation and stability review; the brief stage is mostly a configuration exercise.

Formula Adaptation — adapt an existing formula

You start from the existing DAT Supply formula closest to your concept and say what changes — the actives, the dosage or other ingredients. DAT adapts the formulation, runs a sample round and moves to specification sign-off before production. More review steps than the catalogue route; a genuinely new formula or open-ended R&D is handled as a Custom Project.

Documentation, either way

Both paths produce the same specification and batch documentation package once the formula is locked and production runs — the difference is upstream, in how the formula gets confirmed, not in what ships with the batch.

Which one

When to choose which

Guidance

Choose private label when

You want to launch quickly against an already-reviewed concept, you are comfortable with the catalogue's format and flavour range, and you do not need a proprietary active stack or claim.

Guidance

Choose Formula Adaptation when

Your concept needs an active, dose or ingredient that an existing DAT Supply formula does not carry as it is. A genuinely new formula, with no suitable DAT Supply base, is handled as a Custom Project.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is Formula Adaptation slower than private label?

Usually, because the adapted formula goes through a development sample round and specification sign-off before production, rather than running on an already-reviewed concept as it is. Exact timing is confirmed once DAT reviews your specific brief.

Can I start on the catalogue and move to Formula Adaptation later?

Yes — brands commonly launch on a catalogue concept first and open a Formula Adaptation brief for a later, more differentiated SKU once the first range is in market.
